The Howler Monkey Hotel is located in the town of Cabuya, on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, 2 km from the Cabo Blanco Absolute Nature Reserve and 6 km from Montezuma in Costa Rica. You can get there by bus or car and ferry.
The trip by car will take approximately 4 to 5 hours from either San José or Liberia, including the ferry across the Gulf of Nicoya. It is a good idea to rent a local GPS with your rental vehicle, and bring a good map of Costa Rica.
And be aware the Nicoya Peninsula is notorious for its unpaved roads and potholes. A solid four-wheel-drive is quite useful.
If you take the ferry, note that you can only pay for the ferry in cash. Credit cards are not accepted. The cost for a vehicle and driver is approximately $15 US. The cost for a passenger is approximately $1.50 US.
Gas stations are few on the Nicoya Peninsula. The Howler Monkey Hotel is located on the southern peninsula where there is one gas station in Paquera, two more in Cóbano and another one near Santa Teresa.
From Liberia, drive south towards Jicaral, then to Naranjo and Paquera, and follow the directions to take the ferry.
Taking the Ferry
Taking the ferry in Costa Rica is slightly different. The driver brings the vehicle on board while the passengers walk on.
The ferry ride takes approximately 70 minutes each way, and the last ferry of day is around 8:00 p.m.
Taking the Bus
A Transportes Cóbano bus ($15.50 US) leaves the new Nueva Megaterminal located at the corner of Avenida 7 and Calle 10, on the north side of downtown San José, diagonal to the former Líbano cinema twice daily (6:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.).
The total trip takes approximately 5-1/2 hours. The bus will head to the ferry in Puntarenas. You will have to walk onto the ferry. Only the driver is allowed to drive the vehicle onto the ferry.
Once across the Gulf of Nicoya, you will walk off the ferry and board the bus in Paquera. The bus will then make a few stops on the way to Cóbano. Montezuma is another 10-15 minutes past Cóbano.
A small public bus connects Montezuma to Cabuya and the Cabo Blanco Reserve four times per day. If you arrive in Montezuma later than 4:15 p.m. you will need to take a taxi ($14 US) from the centre of Montezuma to Cabuya.
